There are about eighty pyramids known today from ancient Egypt. The three largest and best preserved of these were built at Giza at the beginning of the Old Kingdom. Pyramids came to our world in about 3000 BCE in the country of Egypt. Egypt has been called the “Gift of the Nile” for the waters of this long, snaking river. It allowed the dry land to become useable for the Egyptians to survive. From the beginning of the Old Kingdom from 2575 to 2130 BCE, the power of Egypt expanded. Government became more centralized and spurred and era of unbroken rule by all powerful pharaohs and kings. In Egypt they revolved around the Nile and the fertile soil along its banks. The yearly flooding of the soil enriched the soil and brought good harvests. The development of pyramid building is important to us today and to world history because it teaches us about the Egyptians and how much we have grown since the beginning of time to now.
As we know, pyramids are important, but we do not know what the purpose of them. The whole purpose of the pyramids was basically so the kings and pharaohs could have a tomb to die in. A tomb was a temple that the Egyptians could worship the spirit of the dead. Early tombs were single story buildings called mastabas. The Old Kingdom architect helped design a building made of six mastabas placed on one on top of the other. The mastabas were made out of four mud bricks. Inside a deep chamber was dug, in which the dead were buried. The tombs were the most beautiful and most important part of the pyramid process, they were very important to Egyptian life.
